Welcome to Fundamentals — a course in music theory built for people who make music, not people studying for an exam. No sheet music, no quizzes, no Italian words you'll never use. Just the parts that actually change how your tracks sound, explained in plain English, in order.
This is Lesson 1, and we're starting at the very bottom: what music is physically made of. It sounds basic, but getting these three ideas straight makes everything later — scales, chords, keys — click into place instead of feeling like memorization. Ten minutes here saves you months of confusion.
A note is just a frequency
When something vibrates — a guitar string, a speaker cone, your vocal cords — it pushes the air back and forth. How fast it vibrates is the pitch you hear. Faster vibration = higher note. Slower = lower note. That's it. A "note" is nothing more mysterious than a specific speed of vibration, measured in Hertz (Hz), meaning vibrations per second.
The reference note the whole musical world tunes to is A = 440 Hz — the "A" above middle C, vibrating 440 times a second (A440 pitch standard). When you load a synth and it sounds "in tune" with everything else, that's because it's anchored to this same reference.
You don't need to do math with frequencies — your DAW handles all of it. But knowing a note is a frequency makes the next idea make sense.
The octave: the most important relationship in music
There's one piece of physics worth knowing here. Double a note's frequency and you get the "same" note, higher up. 220 Hz, 440 Hz, and 880 Hz are all the note A — they just live in different octaves (octaves explained).
This is why a man and a child can sing "the same note" even though one is obviously higher — they're an octave (or two) apart, but our ears hear them as matching. The doubling relationship is so fundamental that every musical culture on earth, independently, built their systems around it.
There are only 12 notes. That's the whole alphabet.
This is the fact that surprises everyone: Western music uses only 12 different notes. Everything — every song you've ever heard, every genre, every era — is built from these 12, repeated across octaves.
If you look at a piano, one octave contains:
- 7 white keys: C, D, E, F, G, A, B
- 5 black keys: the sharps/flats in between
That's 12. After B, you're back to C — the same note, one octave higher, and the pattern repeats. The distance between any two adjacent notes (any key to the very next key, white or black) is called a half step or semitone — the smallest step in Western music.
Why exactly 12? Because of how the octave gets divided. The system almost all modern music uses, called equal temperament, splits the octave into 12 equal steps so that music sounds in tune no matter which note you start a song on (12-tone equal temperament). You don't need the math — you just need to know the alphabet is 12 letters long, then it loops.
Why letters repeat (C, D, E… then C again)
A common beginner stumble: "If there are 12 notes, why only 7 letters?" Because the 7 letters (A–G) name the white keys, and the black keys are named relative to them — a black key is either a sharp (♯, the note just above a letter) or a flat (♭, the note just below one). So the black key between C and D is both "C♯" and "D♭" — same key, two names, depending on context. (Why a single key has two names is a real thing worth understanding later; for now just know it's the same sound.)
The takeaway: 7 letters, 5 in-betweens, 12 total, then it loops every octave.
What you actually need to remember
Forget the rest. Just hold onto these three:

That's the entire foundation. Music isn't an infinite mystery of sounds — it's 12 notes, looping across octaves, and the art is in which ones you choose and how you arrange them in time.
