Producers throw around words like "bass," "mids," "highs," "muddy," and "harsh" as if everyone knows exactly what they mean. But if you've never had the frequency spectrum mapped out clearly, these are just vibes. Once you see the map — where every sound actually lives — EQ, muddy mixes, and the whole idea of "making room" suddenly click. This is that map.
Sound is a range, and you can see it as one
Remember from the very first theory lesson that a sound is a vibration measured in Hertz (Hz) — faster vibration, higher pitch. Human hearing spans roughly 20 Hz (lowest rumble) to 20,000 Hz / 20 kHz (highest sparkle). Every sound you'll ever work with lives somewhere in that range, and most sounds occupy a band of it, not a single point.
Think of the spectrum as real estate. There's only so much room, and every instrument wants a place to live. When two instruments want the same spot, they fight — and that fight is what "muddy" actually is.
The map: what lives where
Here's the spectrum broken into the zones producers actually talk about:

Print this in your head. Once you know roughly where things sit, mixing stops being guesswork.
Why mixes get muddy (the #1 beginner problem)
This is the payoff. "Muddy" almost always means too many things crowded into the low-mids (roughly 200–500 Hz). Nearly every instrument has some energy down there — the bass, the kick, guitars, piano, vocals, pads — and when they all pile into the same band, the result is a thick, undefined sludge where nothing is clear.
The fix isn't to turn things down randomly. It's to give each element its own space. This is what EQ is really for. You decide which element "owns" a frequency range and gently cut that range from the others:
- The bass owns the low end → high-pass (cut the lows from) everything that isn't bass or kick.
- The kick and bass clash → carve a little space for each so they interlock instead of fight (sidechaining helps here too).
- The vocal needs to cut through → dip the instruments slightly in the vocal's core range so the voice has room.
This is the real meaning of "making room in the mix": deliberately deciding who gets which frequency real estate.
The other clue: "harsh" vs. "muddy"
Two complaints, two zones. If a mix is muddy, look at the low-mids (250–500 Hz) — too much there. If a mix is harsh or fatiguing, look at the high-mids (2–6 kHz) — too much there. Just knowing which zone a problem lives in gets you 90% of the way to fixing it. A vague "it sounds bad" becomes a specific, fixable "there's too much energy around 300 Hz."
What you actually need to remember
- Sound spans ~20 Hz to 20 kHz; every instrument occupies a band, not a point.
- The spectrum is real estate — clashes happen when sounds crowd the same range.
- "Muddy" = too much in the low-mids (~250–500 Hz), usually too many instruments piled there.
- "Harsh" = too much in the high-mids (~2–6 kHz).
- Mixing = deciding who owns which frequencies, then EQ-ing to give each its space.
